Cybercrime Obscene texts and threats against actress lead to arrest of man in Jadavpur

A man has been arrested in southern Calcutta for allegedly sending obscene messages and threatening an actress in recent weeks.

The woman had filed a complaint with the Kolkata police. Based on her complaint, police launched an investigation and discovered that the woman was receiving calls from at least 18 different SIM cards from various locations in the city.

An officer said that by maintaining surveillance, the man’s position was located at Garfa off Jadavpur.

Mukesh Sau, the accused, was arrested in Garfa on Sunday evening and brought to court on Monday. The court sent him into custody for 10 days.

“He was arrested on similar charges of harassment, verbal abuse and threats against other women on two separate occasions. He was out on bail when he committed this offense. He claimed he got the actor’s personal number from someone in the television industry, ”said an officer from Lalbazar.

Sau was convicted under sections of criminal intimidation, indecent exposure of a woman by word and gesture, criminal harassment and sections of the Information Technology (IT) law.

Senior officers said women facing such cyberstalking should report the matter to the police so that action can be taken against these cyberstalkers.

“The majority of these cases go unreported because people are afraid of legal hassles if they involve the police and the courts. But not reporting such cases only encourages the perpetrators. We are happy that these days more and more women are coming forward to file formal complaints, ”said a senior officer from Lalbazar.
