Dubai police have seized more than a ton of drugs worth Dh 176 million ($ 48 million) buried across the country as part of a plot led by an international crime syndicate.
The huge cargo of drugs hidden underground at various locations totaled 1,342 kg, including 809,534 kg of hashish, 485,491 kg of crystal meth, 41,888 kg of heroin, 5,241 kg of marijuana, 154 grams of cocaine , 15 grammes of opium and 117,480 narcotic tablets.
The force arrested 91 drug traffickers working with a union overseas in an undercover operation called “Locations”.
Officers took action after being alerted on social media to union members selling drugs in the Emirates.
“Once the information was verified, several field teams from different disciplines were formed to investigate the union’s illegal activities and locate their accomplices,” said Major General Khalil Ibrahim Al Mansouri, deputy commander-in-chief of criminal investigations.
He said the criminal ring buried the drugs before sharing contact details with buyers after the sale closed.
“Locations is proof of the efforts of the highly trained experts and criminal investigators of the Dubai Police Force, as well as the advanced technologies used by the force to combat organized crime and drug addiction,” said Major General Al Mansouri. .
Lt. Gen. Abdullah Khalifa Al Marri, Commander-in-Chief of the Dubai Police Force, has urged the public to beware of cybercriminals who use social media to flood the country with drugs.
He called on people to report any suspicious activity online to the anti-cybercrime force platform www.ecrime.ae
“Criminals are exploiting technology, including social media platforms, to serve their harmful programs, therefore, social media users must remain vigilant and not fall prey to cybercriminals and online drug dealers,” said he declared.
