TikTok, Instagram or YouTube? What is the most used social network currently by American youth? A study looked at social media use among Generation Z and Millennials, and how that use has changed in 2021. The results for the two ratings may not be what you’d expect…

Against all odds, YouTube leads the way among Gen Zers in the US. In a study by YPulse*, Generation Z’s use of the video platform was 77%, more than any other social network. Despite taking the top spot, Gen Z YouTube usage has fallen slightly from its 2020 figure of 79%. Moreover, Generation Z remained addicted to Instagram in 2021, with a usage rate of 67%, up from 62% in 2020. TikTok is the only social network that has shown significant growth, with 64% of young Americans using the Chinese platform, compared to 45% in 2020.

The study suggests that the popularity of YouTube among Generation Z in the US could be due to its practical and useful nature. While young Americans report that they spend an average of four hours per day on social media, according to their own estimations, they use YouTube not only for entertainment, but also to learn new things. The relative age of social networks such as YouTube and Instagram and their influence among brands may also explain their positions in this ranking. Despite this, TikTok’s growth is still much stronger, and is even leading the Chinese giant to outpace Snapchat.

This strong growth in usage is also seen in millennials – the millennial generation. However, while TikTok shows healthy progress, the Chinese social network is only seventh in this usage ranking, with 42% in 2021 compared to 30% in 2020. Facebook remains at the top of the Millennials list, with 75% used in In 2021 compared to 76% in 2020 for Mark Zuckerberg’s platform. It is followed by YouTube and Instagram, with little change year over year.
