Texas bans social networks booting users over politics

Texas on Thursday made it illegal for popular social media platforms to ban users “based on their political views.”

Political conservatives have accused Facebook, Twitter and other social media giants of stifling their voices, and have not presented any evidence to support the claims.

Social media platforms have long defended themselves against such accusations.

Former US President Donald Trump has been fired from Facebook and Twitter after a group of his supporters attacked the Capitol in January in an attempt to prevent his rightly elected successor from taking office.

People were killed during the attack, and there were concerns that Trump would use social media to incite more violence.

“Social media has become our public domain in the modern age,” Texas Governor Greg Abbott said after signing the bill into law Thursday.

“It is a place of healthy public debate where information should be able to flow freely – but there is a dangerous movement by social media companies to silence conservative views and ideas.”

Social media platforms with more than 50 million users are prohibited by law from banning people on the basis of their political views.

The law was expected to conflict with the constitutional rights of private companies to decide what is expressed on their platforms.

“This bill abandons conservative values, violates the First Amendment, and forces websites to host obscene, anti-Semitic, racist, hateful, and other egregious content,” said Steve Delbianco, president of the NetChoice Trade Association.

“Moderation in user posts is essential to keeping the Internet safe for Texas families, but this law will put the Texas government responsible for content policies.”
